Filter shopping is where a lot of beginners get fleeced, not because the filters are bad but because the marketing answers the wrong question. Boxes shout about carbon cartridges, five-stage systems and crystal-clear water, when the only question that matters is: how much surface area does this thing give the bacteria, and how much water does it move past them? I run every major filter type across my tanks, from air-driven sponges on shrimp and fry tanks to a canister on the big community tank, and the honest news is that all of them work. The job is matching the type to the tank, not finding the mythical best one.
What a filter actually does
Strip away the marketing and a filter does three things. Mechanical filtration traps particles in sponge or floss so the water looks clear. Chemical filtration, usually carbon, adsorbs dissolved compounds, and is broadly optional outside removing medications or odours. Biological filtration is the one that keeps fish alive: bacteria colonising the media convert toxic ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate, the process you establish during fishless cycling.
This ordering has practical consequences. A filter is primarily a home for bacteria, and the pump is a delivery service bringing them ammonia and oxygen. So when comparing filters, ignore the cartridge system entirely and ask how much sponge and ceramic media fits inside. It also means the media, not the box, is the valuable part: never replace it all at once, and never rinse it in chlorinated tap water. Sponge filters: the underrated workhorse
An air-driven sponge filter is a foam block on a lift tube, powered by an air pump. It looks like nothing and costs less than a takeaway, and it is the backbone of fishrooms and breeding operations worldwide for good reasons: the entire filter is biological media, the gentle flow cannot hurt fry or shrimp, nothing can be sucked in because the sponge surface is the intake, and it keeps running through power cuts on a battery air pump. Maintenance is squeezing the sponge in a bucket of tank water once a month.
I run sponges on my shrimp tanks, betta tubs and anywhere young fish live, and a seasoned spare sponge is the best quarantine and emergency tool in the hobby: drop it in a new tank and you have carried the cycle across, which makes quarantining new fish painless. The costs are cosmetic and acoustic: a visible foam block in the tank, air pump hum, and no space for chemical media. Polishing fine particles is also not their strength, so heavily stocked show tanks usually want something more. For anything under about 60 litres, or any breeding tank, a sponge filter is my default answer.
Internal power filters: fine for small tanks
The internal power filter, a submerged pump with a sponge cartridge, is what comes bundled with most starter kits. They work adequately on small tanks, say up to 60 or 80 litres, and they are quiet and cheap. Their weaknesses are limited media volume, taking up swimming space inside the tank, and often a stronger, more directional current than small tanks need. If your kit came with one, use it; consider swapping the manufacturer’s cartridge for plain cut-to-fit sponge, which holds more bacteria and never needs replacing. I would rarely buy one separately when a sponge filter costs less and a hang-on-back does more.
Hang-on-back filters: the sensible middle
The HOB hangs on the tank rim with an intake tube in the water and a waterfall return. For tanks from roughly 50 to 150 litres it is the sweet spot for most people: decent media capacity, easy access for maintenance without opening a canister, good surface agitation for gas exchange, and nothing bulky inside the tank. Two upgrades transform a cheap HOB. First, bin the branded cartridges and stuff the box with sponge and ceramic media instead, which works better and ends the subscription. Second, fit a coarse sponge prefilter over the intake, which protects shrimp and fry and keeps the main media cleaner. Canister filters: for big or heavy tanks
A canister sits in the cabinet below the tank, connected by hoses, and is simply a large sealed bucket of media with a pump. Media volume is the whole argument: a mid-size canister holds several litres of sponge and ceramic, an order more than a HOB, which is what large tanks and messy stock actually need. From about 150 litres upward, or for heavy waste producers like goldfish and big cichlids and plecos of the sort discussed in bristlenose pleco care, a canister is the right tool. They are quiet, everything is hidden bar two pipes, and maintenance is needed less often, though when it is needed it is a bigger session. The costs are price and a genuine warning: because the canister is sealed and out of sight, it invites neglect, and a canister left two years becomes a nitrate factory. Put a date sticker on it.
Sizing: turnover and the case for too much filter
The standard rule of thumb is turnover: the pump should move 4 to 6 times the tank volume per hour for an averagely stocked community, so a 100-litre tank wants a filter rated around 400 to 600 litres per hour. Treat manufacturer ratings sceptically, since they are measured with empty filters and no head height; real-world flow is often half the box figure. Heavy stocking, big cichlids or goldfish push the target to 8 to 10 times. Turnover is only half the sizing question, though; the other half is whether your stocking level is sane in the first place, and the stocking calculator is the place to check that before blaming the filter. Here is the reassuring part: within reason, you cannot over-filter a tank. Bacteria populations match the food supply, so oversized media capacity simply means more headroom, longer intervals between cleans, and a buffer when you add fish or overfeed. Buy the filter rated for the next tank size up; the only genuine risk of a big filter is current, and flow can always be tamed with a spray bar or baffle, whereas an undersized filter has no fix except replacement. What you should not do is chase clear water with more mechanical stages; clear and healthy are different properties, and persistent haze is usually a cycle or maintenance issue, as covered in cloudy aquarium water.
My short answers
Pressed for a recommendation, mine goes like this. Breeding, shrimp, quarantine or anything under 60 litres: sponge filter. Ordinary community tank from 50 to 150 litres: hang-on-back stuffed with sponge and ceramic, with a prefilter sponge on the intake. Over 150 litres, or messy fish at any size above small: canister, with the date written on it. Starter kit with an internal: keep it, convert it to plain sponge, and add an air-driven sponge alongside if you ever breed anything. Whatever you buy, the filter is a bacteria farm first and a water pump second, and every purchasing decision falls out of taking that seriously.
