A general community tank is happiest at a stable pH anywhere between 6.5 and 8, and holding that number steady matters far more than hitting any exact figure. Almost every fish sold for a community aquarium is farm-bred and many generations removed from the wild, so it adapts comfortably to a wide band of pH as long as the water does not lurch about. A rock-steady 7.8 is far better for a shop-bought tetra than a tank that swings between 6.5 and 7.5 because someone keeps dosing it.

Why stability beats the perfect number
Fish handle a pH that sits a little away from their care-sheet ideal without much fuss. What they cannot handle is a pH that moves. A swing of a full point in a day is a serious physiological shock, and repeated swings are one of the most common hidden causes of stressed, sickly community fish.
This is why bottled pH-up and pH-down products cause more problems than they solve. They shift the number for a day, the water’s natural buffering drags it back, you dose again, and your fish ride a chemical seesaw. The sane approach runs the other way: test your tap water, accept the reading, and choose fish that suit it.
What actually holds pH steady
The parameter that keeps pH honest is KH, or carbonate hardness. KH is the buffer that soaks up the acids a tank constantly produces. A tank with a KH of roughly 4 dKH or more holds its pH almost regardless of what you do to it. A tank with very low KH has nothing propping the pH up, and it can drift down and eventually crash. So if you want a stable community pH, the thing to check is not really the pH itself but the KH sitting behind it.

What a hard-water community tank looks like
My tap sits at about pH 7.2 out of the mains, and once it has been in a tank for a while, sitting on top of my hard, calcium-heavy water, it settles closer to 7.6 to 7.8. That used to worry me. It should not have. Every community fish I keep in it, livebearers, danios, the odd hardy barb, does perfectly well at that number because the number does not move. My KH is high enough that nothing short of neglect would let the pH crash, and I have never once reached for a bottle of pH-down.
If your tap is hard like mine, the practical takeaway is to stop fighting it. Build the community around fish that already suit alkaline water and you get a tank that runs itself. If your tap is soft and acidic instead, the same logic holds in reverse: keep the soft-water fish that suit it, and do not push the pH up to chase some imagined community ideal. Testing before you trust a number
One habit worth building: test the tank in the evening and again first thing, before the lights come on. In a planted tank, plants pull CO2 out of the water all day and the pH drifts up, then it sags back overnight as CO2 builds. A small daily wobble like that is normal and nothing to fix. What you are watching for is a big move, or a slow week-on-week slide downward, which points to a KH problem rather than anything you dosed. A cheap liquid pH kit and two minutes at each end of the day tells you more than any care sheet.
A quick FAQ
Is 7.5 too high for a community tank? No. A steady 7.5 suits the vast majority of community fish. Livebearers, rainbowfish and many barbs actively prefer the alkaline side.
Should I lower my pH for tetras? Usually not. Farm-raised tetras cope with a stable pH into the high 7s. Chasing it lower with chemicals is riskier than leaving it alone.
My pH keeps dropping. Why? That is almost always low KH letting acids pull the pH down. Test your KH and top up the buffer with regular water changes rather than dosing pH-up.
