The lush green lawn across the front of a tank is the thing most people want from aquascaping, and it is the thing most people fail at, because the carpets in the photos are almost always grown with pressurised CO2 and strong light. Take those away and most famous carpeting plants either grow tall and leggy reaching for light, or melt away entirely. So before you spend money, here is the honest version: what actually carpets without CO2, what will not, and how I get a low green foreground on hard alkaline tap water.
Why CO2 changes everything for carpets
A true carpet needs a plant to grow sideways and stay short while packing in densely. That takes a lot of energy, and carbon is the fuel. With pressurised CO2 and bright light, a foreground plant has everything it needs to creep low and thick. Without added CO2, the same plant is short of carbon, so it does the opposite: it stretches upward hunting for light, goes patchy, and lets algae into the gaps. This is not a technique problem you can practise your way past. It is the plant doing the only thing it can with the energy available. Choosing the wrong species and hoping is the most expensive mistake in this hobby’s foreground.
The famous carpets that will disappoint you without CO2
Save your money on these unless you are running pressurised CO2:
- Dwarf baby tears (Hemianthus callitrichoides “Cuba”). The classic competition carpet. Almost always needs CO2 to stay low. Without it, it thins, floats free and melts.
- Monte Carlo. Often sold as the easy carpet, and it is easier than baby tears, but on low light and no CO2 it tends to grow upward and loose rather than flat and dense. It can just about work with strong light, which most people do not have.
- Glossostigma. Beautiful and reliably miserable without CO2 and high light. It grows vertical and leggy almost immediately.
You can sometimes coax these into a thin, patchy foreground with a very strong light, but you are fighting the plant the whole way, and a strong light without CO2 usually gets you algae before you get a lawn.
What genuinely carpets without CO2
These are the ones I would actually plant, roughly from easiest to fussiest:
- Dwarf sagittaria (Sagittaria subulata). My first choice for a no-CO2 foreground, and it does not mind hard water. It spreads by runners into a grassy mat. In a shorter tank it stays low, in a tall dim tank it can grow taller, so give it decent light. Genuinely hands-off once established.
- Marsilea hirsuta. A slow four-leaf-clover carpet that will grow without CO2. The catch is patience: it can take months to fill in. If you are willing to wait, it makes a lovely low mat.
- Cryptocoryne parva. The smallest crypt, slow but tolerant, and it forms a low midground-to-foreground clump without CO2. Like all crypts it may melt when first planted, then recovers.
- Micranthemum “Monte Carlo” only with strong light, listed here honestly as the borderline case. If your light is genuinely strong it can carpet low-tech. If it is not, it will not, so treat it as a maybe rather than a plan.
- Java moss and other mosses, tied flat to a mesh or a flat stone, are the reliable cheat. Moss is not technically a carpeting plant, but a moss wall or a moss-covered flat rock reads as a low green foreground, grows on anything, and does not care about hardness or CO2 at all.
Growing a carpet on hard water and modest light
My tap runs around 22 to 23 dGH, hard and alkaline, which rules some soft-water plants out but suits the hardy carpeters above. A few things that make the difference between a mat and a mess:
- Plant small and plant lots. Split a pot into many tiny portions and space them across the front. Each one becomes a spreading point. A few big clumps leave gaps that fill with algae; many small starts knit together faster.
- Give the foreground the most light. Carpeting plants sit furthest from the light and get shaded by everything behind them. Keep the front open and do not let taller plants lean over the carpet.
- Feed the roots. Most of these root-feed, so root tabs in the foreground substrate help far more than dosing the water. On hard water the plants are not short of minerals, they are short of carbon and sometimes iron, so a modest liquid iron dose can green them up.
- Do not chase it with more light. The temptation when a carpet is slow is to crank the light. Without CO2 that grows algae, not lawn. Keep the light modest and let the carpet take its time.
The realistic expectation
Without CO2 you can absolutely have a low, green, healthy foreground. What you cannot reliably have is the perfectly flat, dense, competition carpet of dwarf baby tears, because that plant needs carbon you are not giving it. Plant dwarf sagittaria or Marsilea, or cheat with moss on a flat stone, give the front plenty of light and a few months of patience, and you will get a foreground that looks deliberate and suits hard water. If you later decide you want the picture-perfect lawn badly enough, that is the point to consider CO2, and to accept it is a different, more demanding way to run a tank.
